The first week of May is dedicated to preventing falls in construction, a topic we consistently emphasize because it truly matters. This year, we invite you to reflect a little deeper—think about who is waiting for you at home.

Every time you climb a ladder, step onto a scaffold or a MEWP, or approach a leading edge, you carry much more than just your tools and material. You carry responsibilities: family members who rely on you, friends who cherish your presence, and coworkers who trust and depend on your judgment. They’re all counting on you to return home safely each day.

We understand that sometimes it seems quicker or easier to skip hooking up your harness or leave your fall protection gear in the gang box. You might even think, “It’ll only take a moment,” or “I’ve done this a hundred times without an issue.” But it’s precisely in these moments when our guard is down that accidents occur. Falls don’t discriminate based on experience—they can happen to anyone, at any moment. In fact, two of the most severe fall injuries we’ve seen here at Hudson Bay resulted directly from moments of complacency. It happens.

We’ve all heard stories or known someone affected by a fall. A split-second decision can have lasting, devastating consequences—not just for you, but for everyone around you. The injuries from a fall can dramatically alter your life, impacting your ability to support your family, enjoy your hobbies, or even carry out everyday tasks. And tragically, falls can be fatal.

Your fall protection equipment isn’t merely gear—it’s your lifeline. Your harness, lanyard, anchor points, and guardrails are not just tools; they symbolize our shared commitment to safety, mutual respect, and the promise that no job is so urgent or important that we cannot do it safely.

Never compromise on safety. Wear your harness every time, thoroughly inspect your gear before each use, and always tie-off properly. Take that extra moment to double-check the anchor points and ensure all equipment is secure. Remember, every safety rule exists because someone paid a heavy price before it was established. These procedures are built upon lessons learned from those who were injured or lost because they lacked the protections we have today.
